Vain Vanecek deserves vitriol

-

DAVID VANECEK is a disgrace. And no matter how many followers he boasts in the vacuous fantasy world of Instagram, the people who pay their money into Tynecastle every week should not let him forget it.

The Czech forward was full of it when he finally turned up to start life at Hearts. All that stuff about being a warrior out to win cups and become Scotland’s top scorer.

He did mention that he had a bit of work to do as a result of being sick in December and taking antibiotics. Nothing was said, though, about the fact he had gone to Thailand for a month on holiday and, according to his new manager Craig Levein, done no training whatsoever.

What kind of athlete — indeed, what kind of person — must this character be? Being fit is his job. He knew he had to hit the ground running here after signing a pre-contract to move from Teplice six months ago. Holiday or not, how hard would it have been to stay in shape?

That Levein is sticking with Vanecek despite all this is puzzling. Not half as dispiriting as the cheers that saw him welcomed onto the park like some kind of cult hero against St Johnstone yesterday, mind you.

What must committed pros such as Stevie Naismith make of it all?

Like most who grandstand on social media, the picture we are seeing of Vanecek in the real world is far from pretty. He has shown Hearts zero respect. And deserves nothing in return.
