GARDEN GURU

-

QI have a magnolia in a pot that I want to plant in the ground. When would be the best time to do this? Irene Gleaves

ALate autumn is the best time, but early spring is also fine. Make sure you provide the magnolia with a sunny, sheltered spot in neutral or slightly acidic soil. Tease out any congested roots and water frequently during its first season in the ground.

QI have a square garden with a 3ft-tall fence. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is planted on one side and berberis on the other. I keep them cut short. I’d like to replace the berberis with a plant with red leaves, but can’t find anything that responds well to clipping. What do you suggest? Brenda Roxburgh

AThere’s actually a deciduous berberis that might suit your needs. ‘Orange Sunrise’ is a fairly recent introduction, with pink foliage at the start of the season, turning deep red with distinctive yellow margins. It grows to 3½ft. Another option is Nandina domestica ‘Pink Blush’, a compact form of heavenly bamboo, whose dark pink new foliage turns red in autumn.

QThe camellia bush in our front garden hasn’t produced any flower buds this year. What’s up? Marilyn Allen

AI suspect last summer’s drought is to blame. These plants form buds from July until early autumn. This year, ensure that the soil is never allowed to dry out during this critical period.
