Scottish dad, 53, is found dead in hotel pool at 1am
A SCOTS father has died after being found floating in a hotel swimming pool only days into a sunshine holiday in Spain with his wife.
The holidaymaker – named as 53-year-old businessman Iain McKellar – was spotted in the water just before 1am local time yesterday.
Hotel staff and paramedics tried for 45 minutes to revive him but sources said there was nothing they could do. It is believed he went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced at the scene.
Mr McKellar, from Rothesay, on the Isle of Bute, was staying at the three-star Hotel Oasis Village in Corralejo, in the north of Fuerteventura, the second largest of Spain’s Canary Islands.
It is believed he was on holiday with his wife, Yvonne, and that they had been at the resort for only three days.
Last night, his 13-year-old son Finlay posted a picture on Facebook showing him standing next to his father. Donna Currie replied: ‘Thinking of you and your mum.’
Mr McKellar ran a successful business on Bute called Just Seaweed, harvesting and selling edible seaweed.
Bute provost Len Scoullar said: ‘As a community, we offer our most sincere condolences to Mr McKellar’s family and friends.’
An inquiry into the death has been launched by Spanish Civil Guard officers. Investigators have indicated there is nothing to suggest suspicious circumstances, although a post-mortem examination has yet to take place.
Yesterday, a spokesman for a government-run emergency services co-ordination centre said: ‘A 53-year-old British man has been pronounced dead after being found floating in a swimming pool in the municipality of La Oliva in Fuerteventura. We received an alert at 12.52am informing us a person had been found in the water. An emergency response was immediately activated and private health workers at the hotel and emergency responders tried to revive the man, who had gone into cardiac arrest. None of the attempts to save his life were successful.’
A source close to the investigation said: ‘He was found in the pool by a night security guard and another tourist who made an unsuccessful attempt to save his life.
‘There were no external signs of physical injuries or the participation of other people in what happened but officers are awaiting the results of the autopsy.’
Another insider said: ‘For 45 minutes the people who dragged him out the water and medical responders were trying to save his life.’.
