Khan eyes historic upset to seal legacy

- By James Sharpe

AMIR KHAN believes victory over Terence Crawford would cement his legacy as one of the greatest British boxers of all time.

The former world champion will head into the ring as a huge underdog against the undefeated Crawford, one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world.

Khan has not fought anyone of Crawford’s calibre since he went up two weight divisions and was put on his back by Saul Alvarez in 2016, a defeat which prompted a two-year hiatus from the ring.

If Khan can be the first to defeat Crawford and get his hands on the WBO world welterweight title.

‘It will cement my legacy as one of the best out there, one of the best British fighters to box in the ring,’ said Khan, who at 32 has admitted he only has a few fights left in him before retirement.

‘Hopefully, it can inspire young fighters, especially young Asian kids, to think: “If Amir could do it, we can do it too”.

‘I don’t think he’s ever fought anyone like me.

‘Someone with my power, speed, size. The size is the most important thing in this fight. I think that is what is going to help me.

‘And the speed I have with that size. The power. Those three things are going to give him problems.’

Khan has also taken advice from boxing legend Mike Tyson about how to remain focussed amid the distractions that the fame, wealth and celebrity of boxing can bring.

‘Mike is a lovely guy, one of those guys who tries to give advice to everybody,’ said Khan. ‘I asked him what it was like when he was trying to train and the distractions were there, what he did, what he did differently. He was so dedicated and disciplined.’
