McAvennie: United an obvious fit for Kieran

- EWING GRAHAME

CELTIC hero Frank McAvennie was, in the words of the late Tommy Burns, a fan who got lucky. He joined his boyhood heroes from West Ham United for a club-record fee of £750,000 in 1987 and his goals fired them to a league and Scottish Cup double in their centenary season. McAvennie insists that in Kieran Tierney, Celtic have a fan who will make his own luck. And that doesn’t necessarily mean they about to lose him any time soon, with the history books looming large. However, if Tierney does succumb to the admiring glances from down south, McAvennie believes Manchester United stand out as an obvious destination — because he is already better than their £30million fullback Luke Shaw. ‘You listen to KT and he’s a big Celtic fan, so doing 10-in-a-row is the be all and end all for him,’ said McAvennie. ‘I’d love to see Kieran stay for 10 but if a big offer comes in, he’s a wonderful player and deserves to play in the best league in the world. ‘He’ll be looking at other players on massive money but he’s only young and he’ll get that in a couple of years. He can walk away with all those titles under his belt while still being a young boy. ‘If Tierney goes down to England, I think he could go to Manchester United. He’d be a great replacement for Luke Shaw because it’s the worst defence I’ve seen in a United strip for years. ‘Getting Tierney would be a great start to rebuilding it because I think he’s better than Shaw now. In two years’ time...’
