Oh no! Now quinoa’s a risk

TRENDY superfood quinoa could induce a dangerous allergic reaction.

The alarm was raised after a 24-year-old man suffered a severe reaction – including difficulty breathing – after he ate at an Indian restaurant in Manchester. A pin-prick test revealed his allergy and he was treated with antihistamines.

NHS immunologist Shuayb Elkhalifa, who will speak on the topic at the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology conference in June, said there could be other ‘hidden’ cases of quinoa allergy.
