McGregor makes good on promise to come out on top in all-Scots bout

-

BOXING: Lee McGregor lived up to his promise to silence Scott Allan as he retained his Commonwealth title belt in a thrilling all-Scots tear-up in Glasgow last night.

Referee Victor Loughlin stepped in to halt the fight midway through the eighth round after deciding Allan, his face heavily bleeding, was unable to continue at the Emirates Arena.

All eyes will now be on the much anticipated match-up with British champion Kash Farooq, who sat ringside taking in the action.

The win takes McGregor’s record to 7-0 as his rise through the ranks continues. The 22-year-old had to work hard for this victory over Shotts boxer Allan, who started the stronger before eventually being worn down.

McGregor (above), roared on by pal and world champion Josh Taylor, was the taller and rangier of the fighters but Allan did not hesitate in getting in about him. A cut opening up above his right eye in the fourth, however, was the first sign of McGregor starting to dominate and he doled out some sustained punishment a round later.

McGregor finally put Allan down for the first time in the eighth round before the referee called a halt.

GOLF: Englishman Jordan Smith takes a one-shot lead into today’s final round of the BMW International Open in Munich after a third-round 66. Smith is just ahead of compatriot Matt Fitzpatrick and Austrian Matthias Schwab, who both carded 65s.

Meanwhile, Scotland’s Euan Walker lost in the final of the Amateur Championship at Portmarnock near Dublin to home player James Sugrue on the 36th green.

ARCHERY: Great Britain’s first gold medal at the European Games in Minsk came from the women’s archery team. Fourtime Olympian Naomi Folkard joined team-mates Bryony Pitman and Sarah Bettles to beat hosts Belarus 6-2 in the final.
