I’m going back to acting at age of 70, says Lulu

SHE made her big screen debut 52 years ago – although movies always took second place to singing.

But now, Lulu is preparing to make a return to acting – after a little nudge from Robert the Bruce.

The 70-year-old has employed an acting coach and is studying the Meisner technique – a method favoured by stars including Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton.

Lulu said: ‘I do love to act. I’ve been studying Meisner, I’ve been studying with a great coach and I want to get back into acting.’

The singer’s first role was in 1967’s To Sir With Love, alongside the legendary Sidney Poitier.

It came only three years after the Glaswegian star shot to the top of the charts with Shout.

After To Sir With Love – for which Lulu also sang the theme song – she had her own television series and starred in a handful of films, including 1970 comedy Cucumber Castle and 1974’s The Cherry Picker. More recently, she had a cameo playing herself in 2016’s Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie.

But she has now been encouraged to ‘do more acting’ by Braveheart star Angus Macfadyen, who resumes his role as Robert the Bruce in a new biopic. The movie, named after the monarch, was released on Friday.

Lulu does not appear in the film but wrote and performed the closing theme song.

The singer – who co-writes with her brother, Billy Lawrie – said: ‘I’ve known Angus a long time and when he told me he’d finally got [Robert the Bruce] done, I was thrilled – but then he said, “Would you be interested in writing a song?”. I said, “Send me the script”, and we were blown away.

‘It’s so beautiful. There are lines in the song that are in the script – it’s called The Air of Freedom.

‘If you have great words, a great script, then he gave us directions of what reaction he wanted from the song, so it came very quickly.

‘I’m thrilled to be a part of it. At the end, it’s heartbreaking – then my song comes in and says it all.’
