Robinson delighted as Motherwell late show stuns Queens

- By Joe Gardner

MOTHERWELL got their 2019/20 season off to a winning start after a late flurry of goals ensured a simple victory at Queen of the South.

Liam Donnelly’s penalty in the 71st minute looked as though it was going to be enough for Stephen Robinson’s side before strikes from new boys Sherwin Seedorf and Jermaine Hylton in stoppage time put the match to bed.

‘It was always going to be a tricky game but we wore them down,’ said Robinson. ‘We dominated the whole second half and I thought we deserved the win in the end.’

While Motherwell dominated possession in the opening 45 minutes, it was Queens who had by far the better chances. The best came in the 20th minute when Stephen Dobbie chipped the ball across the face of goal to Connor Murray at the back post but the ball was blocked on the line by Donnelly.

After the break, Motherwell pressed higher up the pitch. In the 57th minute, Charles Dunne was denied by the crossbar as he looked to divert a corner home before Donnelly saw his rebound nodded over the bar by Lee Kilday.

Then, 20 minutes from time, referee Don Robertson pointed to the spot after Scott Mercer brought down Motherwell substitute Hylton. Donnelly stepped up and made no mistake as he sent Robby McCrorie the wrong way.

The three points never looked in doubt from that point on, but debut goals from Seedorf and Hylton were welcomed nonetheless. The young Dutch winger proved his quality as he drove down the left wing, cut inside and curled the ball inside the far post before Hylton blasted in a 25-yard screamer.

‘I thought we competed for large periods of the game,’ said Queens boss Allan Johnston. ‘But we didn’t take our chances and that’s always going to come back to haunt you.’
