Courageous Kate is such an inspiration

I found Kate Figes’ You magazine article – ‘Facing death has taught me how to live’ – more heartwarming than anything I have read in a long time. Ms Figes is a lovely, intelligent woman making the most of her life (however long it may last), discovering beauty in the course of an ordinary day and, crucially, realising that she cannot take away her daughters’ grief. I was drawn to her account because illness over several months this year has given me a new respect for my body and life. My body doesn’t work as well as it used to but the realisation that I am not, after all, invulnerable has been worth the suffering.

I am so very sorry that Kate faces such an uncertain future. She has confirmed for me the importance of living for each precious day.

I hope she stays for a good while longer.
