Motherwell boss arrested after ‘disturbance’

- By Fraser Mackie

MOTHERWELL manager Stephen Robinson last night denied any wrongdoing following his arrest on Friday evening in Edinburgh.

Robinson, whose team host Rangers today, was charged and bailed in connection with an alleged disturbance near Waverley Station.

The 45-year-old, heavily touted for the Hearts job before Daniel Stendel’s appointment, had been on a private day out — unconnected to the club — in the capital on Friday.

In a statement released by Motherwell last night, Robinson said: ‘I want to make clear that I deny the charges against me and any wrongdoing on Friday.

‘I am very upset by what has become a distressing situation for my partner, myself and our families. We had a lovely day in Edinburgh and were trying to get home in good time before the incident occurred.

‘It is not possible to give a detailed account when a legal process is underway, which adds to our family anxiety.

‘I am confident this will be found to be a misunderstanding once the legal process has run its course.’

The club insisted it will be business as usual at Fir Park today with Robinson in charge for the visit of Rangers, as it was yesterday when he took training ahead of the match.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said last night: ‘A 45-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a disturbance on Waverley Bridge around 7.45pm on Friday, December 13.

‘No one was injured. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.’
