‘Danger to life’ storm to be WORSE than expected

- By Paul Drury

WARNINGS for a ‘danger to life’ 80mph storm due to hit Scotland tomorrow have been upgraded.

A much larger area than first feared now lies in the path of a deep low pressure system sweeping in from the Atlantic, the Met Office has said.

The ‘danger to life’ alert has also been extended in time by 12 hours, beginning at noon tomorrow and not ending until 9am on Tuesday. As the storm begins, gusts of 55 and 65mph can be expected widely, with wind speeds of 70 to 80mph in exposed parts of the North-West and Hebrides.

Winds will transfer to the South of the country to incorporate the Central Belt. The Met Office’s Simon Partridge said: ‘It is the North-West which is first to suffer, with winds moving South-East. Monday will be chilly, with a raw feel to the air.’

The transport network is expected to be disrupted, with road, rail, air and ferry services affected. Some roads and bridges could be closed to all traffic and a ‘danger to life’ could be presented by flying debris.

People are warned to stay away from sea fronts due to the risk of giant waves.
