Liquid gold ...rare malt set to fetch record price

- By George Mair

IT has been described as the ‘Holy Grail of whisky’.

Now, the rare Macallan could set a world record for the price paid for a bottle of Scotch.

A 60-year-old Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 (pictured) is part of the sale of the world’s largest private whisky collection. It is one of only 12 bottles produced in 1986 by the Speyside distillery, featuring a label by Italian artist Adami.

Bidding opened on Friday and offers for the bottle had topped £750,000 by yesterday.

The record is £848,750, from a sale in Edinburgh in 2018.

The whiskies were owned by US businessman Richard Gooding, who died in 2014. The online sale is being run by Perth-based Whisky Auctioneer.

Experts predict the auctions could fetch up to £8 million.

Bidding closes on February 17.
