1 ASPARAGUS ‘BURGUNDINE’
The purple spears of this recent introduction (right) have a sweet flavour and are so tender they can even be eaten raw.

This British native is a dual-purpose edible – harvest shoots in winter and bulbs in late summer as a substitute for garlic.
3 GLOBE ARTICHOKE ‘GREEN GLOBE’
A spectacular plant boasting silvery-green, deeply toothed leaves and 6ft-tall stems topped with large, edible flower buds.
4 RHUBARB ‘VICTORIA’
Named in honour of Queen Victoria after her coronation in 1837, this produces heavy yields of thick, tender red stems with green flecking.
5 SEA KALE ‘ANGERS’
A striking plant with large, silvery leaves and sprays of pretty white flowers. Its young stems are ideal for forcing.
