Henderson glad to see Altior still has the weapons

Altior showed he is still the one to beat in next month’s Queen Mother Champion Chase with a cosy win in the Betfair Game Spirit Chase at Newbury.

Defi Du Seuil remains 2-1 favourite for the Champion Chase while Chacun Pour Soi is breathing down Altior’s neck, with both at 9-4.

But, in beating Sceau Royal three-and-a-quarter lengths, the 10-year-old showed he retains the sparkle that has twice earned him the Champion Chase.

Altior’s 19-race unbeaten run was ended by Cyrname at Ascot in November and then a painful abscess hindered his preparation for the rest of the campaign.

Trainer Nicky Henderson said: ‘There is no doubt we were under pressure today but I have got to say I was fairly confident.’

Canada’s Nick Taylor takes a one-shot lead into today’s final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after carding a third-round 69 in California.

The 31-year-old (right) moved to 17 under par, while American Phil Mickelson is second after his round of 67, two shots ahead of Australian Jason Day, whose 70 left him 14 under.
