SIR Sam Mendes’ PR team lost the plot at the Oscars when they prematurely declared on social media that he was a double winner for wartime drama 1917. Parasite’s Bong Joon-ho saw off Mendes in two of the most coveted categories, which seemed to be a surprise to the Briton’s team who declared: ‘Sam Mendes, winner of the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture for his WWI epic 1917.’ The Facebook post – put up by publicists for Sam’s Broadway play – stayed there for hours.
I’m sure Sam, who was at the bash with musician wife Alison Balsom, right, wasn’t too downcast – at least the film won gongs for visual effects, sound mixing and cinematography.
