CAREER: 1981-1997: IBM, various roles. 1997-1999: Managing director of De La Rue Card Systems. He sold the smart card business in 1999 for £206million, more than the value of the entire business today.

2000-2001: IBM’s UK chief executive.

2001-2003: Motorola’s president of Europe, Middle East and Africa.

2003-2005: Cable & Wireless’s chief operating officer.

2005-2020: Micro Focus executive chairman.
