It’s not the time to soak the rich

-

Apparently Boris Johnson is considering a mansion tax on expensive homes. But many homeowners have unexpectedly found themselves to be property millionaires through price rises, not because they have large incomes or have been climbing the property ladder.

Any attempts to ‘soak the property rich’, in an echo of David Lloyd George’s People’s Budget, will not go down well today.

An attack on the ‘castle’ that the average Briton views as his home will be defended to the hilt by the valiant homeowner.

A mansion tax could be construed as a breach of the moat.

Has the Government not witnessed the fallout from the recent Labour manifesto, which included tax rises?

Therefore, I sincerely hope that the Government will not go ahead with any so-called mansion taxes.

It would be far better instead to tax those foreign investors who are buying up London real estate and then leaving the homes empty. Susan Thomas, Oxford
