Soft on crime

I would really like someone in government to explain why we as a nation are so soft on criminals. Why do I have to abide by the law, yet so many are happy to break it because they are not expected pay for their crime? Other countries have such severe deterrents for crimes involving drugs and violence that the offending rate is very low. Why are our politicians failing our citizens? Peter Bryant, Ramsgate
