Woke brigade determined to ignore the facts

-

Last week, your extract from the late Christopher Booker’s book imagined what time travellers from the 1950s would make of the world today, where it is fashionable to believe there is no difference between men and women. But many of us have experienced these changes, from flower power to the ‘me’ generation to being ‘woke’.

Increasingly, there have been minority groups with loud voices – endorsed by the liberal elite and academia – holding sway over our lives. What a pity that the

Ten Commandments are not taught any more. They are not religious dogma. Taken literally, they provide a personal blueprint to a tolerant and caring society for everyone. Alan Stackman, Calne, Wiltshire

With regard to your report last week about a lecturer being branded ‘abhorrent’ for saying only females menstruate, it appears that society is shifting from political correctness gone mad to political correctness being too hysterical to heed reason.

Human biology (for those who have forgotten) is such that people are born with either male or female sex organs, rarely with both or none. If someone has female organs, they will most likely ovulate, menstruate and eventually go through the menopause. This cannot be achieved with mere wishful thinking. Female organs are required to be present, in the same way that a trans man would need the necessary male organs to produce semen. Lecturer Eva Poen, from Exeter University, is in no way being ‘transphobic’ by stating biological facts. Efrosyni Hobbs, Eltham, South-East London

Back in the 1950s, men were men and women were glad of it. In today’s liberal society, a hulking, bearded male can self-identify as a woman. However, the reality is that he is not. So why do we all have to pretend he is? Alan Aitchison, Wakefield

Why does the woke generation believe it is entitled to special treatment? Over-reacting when one perceives one is hurt or offended by something is a sign of immaturity. While it is normal for small children to throw tantrums, adults should show some restraint. Being woke does not entitle one to special treatment. A snowflake should toughen up, as being hurt or offended is an everyday occurrence in most people’s lives. Caroline West, Swansea

The student who branded an Exeter University lecturer ‘abhorrent’ and who accused her of bigotry for saying only women have periods is herself bigoted.

Just because someone may hold views different from one’s own does not necessarily make them prejudiced or closed-minded. What is prejudiced is denying them the basic right to maintain and express those views. F. Harvey, Bristol
