ENGLAND’S BROWN WANTS THE REST OF SIX NATIONS SCRAPPED

- By Sean Vincent

ENGLAND full-back Mike Brown has called for this season’s Six Nations to be scrapped to save players from burnout and unnecessary injuries later in the year.

The final set of fixtures have been postponed due to the coronavirus crisis, with the destination of the championship still uncertain.

However, Brown insists that pales into insignificance given the current climate and said there should be no sentimentality when it comes to completing the tournament.

‘I’m no medical expert but this year’s Six Nations should be called off,’ said Brown. ‘There’s talk of postponing the unplayed matches until October but that could push player workloads to breaking point.

‘If you tagged on an extra game to the autumn series — or two in Italy and Ireland’s case — you’d be scheduling five or six Tests in as many weeks. There’s a reason there are “rest weekends”.

‘If you were to play five Test matches in a row, then go straight back to your club before a Lions tour, there would be more injuries.

‘If you’re involved in one of those teams, you won’t moan about it in public. You love playing for your country and you’re earning 20-odd grand a match as an England player, but guys are coming back to their club knackered.

‘I saw (England prop)

Kyle Sinckler on Friday and it’s a tough ask to pick yourself back up.

‘As far as the Six Nations is concerned, just call it a day. It has hardly been a classic tournament and there would be no consistency if you pick it back up in October. There would be no narratives. It just wouldn’t feel right.

‘The Twitter army will get on to me if I say just give the title to the team who is currently top, because that’s England, so just write it off.’
