£360k for a vintage film poster? Well, here’s looking at you, kid!

I loved your feature on vintage film posters and how much they can fetch. I’d love a poster of Casablanca worth £360,000. It’s such a wonderful film. Just think of all the sayings we have that stem from it: ‘We’ll always have Paris’; ‘Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine’; ‘Here’s looking at you, kid’; and, my favourite, ‘I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship’. L. Victor, London

Peter Hitchens made an excellent point last week about the greater safety of travelling by railway as opposed to going by road.

It reminded me of the time in February 2007 when there was an urgent statement by the Secretary of State for Transport in the

House of Commons after an incident on the railways had resulted in a fatality. I asked: ‘Assuming the daily carnage on our roads has been repeated in the three days since this rail tragedy, will he confirm that about 30 people will have been killed in road crashes in that time? How many road deaths does it take to get him to come to the Dispatch Box?’ Sir Bob Russell, former MP for Colchester and one-time Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Road Safety Group

Why does the BBC produce shows such as Noughts + Crosses – in which the black population is granted favour at the expense of the whites – when they have already played a large part in making sure such an ‘alternate reality’ is already with us? John Evans, Wokingham
