Haq hospitalised for virus after London trip
FORMER Scotland cricket captain Majid Haq revealed yesterday that he has tested positive for coronavirus.
The 37-year-old from Paisley is being treated at the town’s Royal Alexandria Hospital.
He announced on Twitter that he was ‘looking forward to potentially getting back home’ and thanked hospital staff for their assistance.
The off-spinner believes he must have contracted the virus on a London tube train.
Haq played 54 one-day internationals and 24 Twenty20 Intenationals for Scotland between 2006 and 2015.
He concluded: ‘Insha
Allah the panther will be back to full health soon.’
Meanwhile, Portsmouth FC yesterday confirmed that four of their players had tested positive for the virus.
They are James Bolton, Andy Cannon, Sean Raggett and Haji Mnoga. The English League One side said the quartet are all self-isolating and the club has notified Public Health England.
All players and first-team staff were tested earlier in the week and Portsmouth said they are awaiting results of ten more tests.
Rangers centre-half Ross McCrorie is currently on loan at Pompey.
‘Football is not immune from this virus and I can assure you that it only really hits home when those that you know contract it,’ said Portsmouth chief executive Mark Catlin.
Portsmouth’s players and staff were tested following their FA Cup tie with Arsenal after several of the Gunners squad had been in contact with Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis on the night of their Europa League meeting.
Marinakis, who also owns Nottingham Forest, confirmed he had the virus on March 10. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta subsequently tested positive for coronavirus.
And last night it was revealed that Juventus and Argentina forward Paulo Dybala and Italian football legend Paolo Maldini have also tested positive.
Dybala is the third Juve player to be confirmed to have the virus, following Daniele Rugani and Blaise Matuidi.
AC Milan technical director Maldini and his son Daniel — who had been training with the club — both tested positive and a club statement said they ‘are well’.
Former Real Madrid president Lorenz Sanz, 76, died yesterday in hospital from the virus.
