BRORA ARE CHAMPIONS AS CAMPAIGN IS HALTED
BRORA RANGERS player-manager Steven Mackay admits he was left feeling strangely flat yesterday after his team were prematurely crowned Highland League champions.
In a decision that could resonate at the highest level in Scottish football, given current league uncertainties, Brora landed the honour six games shy of their 32-match campaign.
The Highland Football League showed initiative at a time when much of the Scottish game remains embroiled in uncertainty over the outcome and chances of completing season 2019-20.
Club representatives of the 17-strong division met yesterday and voted unanimously to end the season immediately and award Brora the title.
Mackay said: ‘The league decided to end the season here and now, which I feel was the right and only sensible thing to do.
‘There was no way we were going to be able to continue playing in the circumstances. I think we’ve earned it.
‘But there’s a much wider, more serious issue at stake here, which is people’s lives.’
A league restructuring could see Brora and a Lowland League side catapulted into the national set-up.
