Trump’s best response to Morgan? A Twitter snub

- By Michael Powell

THEY have been friends for more than a decade but Donald Trump yesterday severed ties with Piers Morgan in the most modern of ways – by unfollowing him on Twitter.

The US President appears to have taken offence at a withering article on Mail Online by Morgan in which he attacked him for his ‘breathtakingly stupid, reckless and dangerous’ suggestion that coronavirus patients could be cured by ultraviolet light or disinfectant. ‘Shut the f*** up, President Trump,’ Morgan wrote.

The broadcaster and Mail on Sunday columnist went on to accuse the President of having ‘turned the daily White House taskforce briefing into a rambling two-hour self-promoting rally’.

Morgan later tweeted: ‘UPDATE: President @realDonaldTrump has unfollowed me on Twitter, hours after I wrote this Daily Mail column.’

The row comes days after Morgan, 55, appeared on US TV news channel CNN to accuse Mr Trump of ‘failing the American people’ as Covid-19 deaths in the US rocketed above 50,000.

It was a far cry from two years ago when the pair sat cosily on the President’s jet, Air Force One, for an exclusive interview.

Mr Morgan became friends with the billionaire New York businessman in 2008 when he won the US celebrity version of The Apprentice, which was fronted by Trump at the time.

But the former newspaper editor has chastised Mr Trump, 73, on several occasions since, urging him to reverse a controversial plan to ban Muslims from travelling to the US and telling him to ‘stop this madness’ after he retweeted Britain First, a far-Right hate group.
