Confusion as patients get second ‘stay home’ letter

- By Marcello Mega

SCOTLAND’S most vulnerable patients have been forced to contact their GPs after receiving second letters from the Government advising them to stay at home for 12 weeks.

The new letters, received several weeks after the first, extend their isolation, but have only left them distressed and confused.

Frustrated GPs, already stretched by the crisis, say they are having to deal with a higher volume of calls from patients who are seeking clarity.

One Lothian doctor insists patients receiving a second letter should have been told the 12 weeks were counted from the date of the first letter – but that has not been the case.

He said: ‘Isolation and loneliness are underrated as killers of the elderly. People who are in poor health and can’t get out rely on visits from family.’

The GP admitted he and some colleagues advised certain patients who were shielding not to stick to the guidelines too rigidly because of the distress caused by total isolation.

He added: ‘We are worried about the effects of Covid-19 on our most vulnerable patients, but we are also worried about their mental health and morale.

‘I have told an obese patient who had not left the house or seen anyone for weeks that it might be good for him to choose his times, but to go for an occasional walk.

‘I have colleagues who have made similar judgments dealing with distressed patients.’

The Scottish Government wants the most vulnerable people in communities to continue shielding at least until June 18.
