THEY’RE QUEUING ROUND THE BLOCK FOR STARBUCKS... BUT NO TAKERS FOR TESTING

- By Katherine Sutherland

LINES of cars snaked down roads across Scotland yesterday as motorists queued for drive-through coffee or doughnuts – but the lanes were surprisingly empty at a coronavirus testing centre.

The Army-run screening facility at the former Cockenzie power station, in East Lothian, was virtually deserted, with masked staff in camouflage gear waiting around.

The drive-through facility, for health, care and key workers, is considered vital to help assess potential carriers and stop the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, seemingly flouting lockdown rules to make only essential journeys, Scots gathered in their droves at branches of Costa in Glasgow and a Starbucks at the city’s Great Western Retail Park. The Krispy Kreme in Edinburgh also had queues.

It comes after traffic was brought to a standstill in Elgin, Moray, last week by cars queuing at a Burger King.

Police had to be called to help disperse cars and the fast-food restaurant had to close.
