The ‘safe havens’ where killer virus has claimed 19 residents

The two care homes under investigation have both been ravaged by coronavirus.

Springvale, in Lennoxtown, Dunbartonshire, describes itself as a ‘new luxury care home’, with stunning views of the Campsie Fells.

The website states: ‘We offer beautiful en-suite accommodation, with the highest levels of Rresidential, dementia, respite care and nursing support for all residents from our highly trained, compassionate team.’ The home offers fine dining as well as a library, wi-fi, hair and beauty salon, and minibus service.

A statement on April 13 read: ‘Our staff are both dedicated and committed to providing the best care to any resident who is or may become unwell in response to suspected or confirmed cases of Covid19, and they do so while wearing full personal protective equipment in line with local and national guidelines.’

There have reportedly been nine deaths relating to coronavirus, although last night a spokesman disputed this figure, saying the real number was lower.

Meanwhile, the 40-bed home Farm care home in Portree, Isle of Skye, offers a ‘family atmosphere’ from a ‘caring team’.

It is an integral part of the local community. Former residents included mother-of-three and grandmother-of-five Ina Beaton, of Balmaqueen, on the northernmost tip of the island.

Mrs Beaton passed away earlier this month – having just celebrated her 103rd birthday – after a positive Covid-19 test.

her grandson told a newspaper: ‘I find it difficult when I hear the way that the care home operator and the Scottish Government and others have been passing the buck around and around on issues like testing and PPe.

‘In the next while we have to reflect on that and make some big changes, but now all I would like to hear is those in positions of power and responsibility taking some ownership over what went wrong and why.’ home Farm offers day care, as well as both short and long stays. It caters for needs including nursing, mental health, dementia, and palliative care.

The website states: ‘Residents are invited to decorate their rooms with small items of their own furniture and treasured belongings so that it feels just like home.

‘Daily life is carefully designed to support mind, body and soul.’

Describing the home as ‘small and welcoming’, the website adds: ‘The enclosed garden, which is looked after by some of the residents, is a favourite location to enjoy the company of friends and family.’
