‘Slave’ streets get renamed

-

ANTI-RACISM campaigners yesterday renamed Scottish streets that have historical links to the slave trade.

Several new signs appeared alongside the originals in Glasgow city centre, with the names of tobacco lords replaced by those of black activists and slaves.

Cochrane Street, named after Andrew Cochrane, an 18th Century tobacco lord, was renamed ‘Sheku Bayoh Street’.

Mr Bayoh, 32, died in 2015 in police custody in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

Buchanan Street, named after tobacco lord Andrew Buchanan, was renamed George Floyd Street.

Mr Floyd’s death in the US last month – after a white police officer knelt on his neck – has sparked huge protests.
