President’s tweet ‘pours fuel on fire’

-

US PRESIDENT Donald Trump was accused of ‘pouring fuel on the fire’ last night by retweeting a video of a black conservative activist saying George Floyd – the man whose death has sparked huge protests – was ‘not a good person.

Mr Trump appeared to show his support for Candace Owens, who described Floyd, the black man choked to death by a police officer on May 25, as ‘a symbol of broken culture in black America today’.

Owens said: ‘The fact that he has been held up as a martyr sickens me. George Floyd was not a good person.’

She cited the fact that Floyd, 46, went to prison five times – including once for aggravated assault and robbery after entering a pregnant woman’s home and pointing a gun at her stomach. ‘This woman now has to watch him being held up as a hero,’ said Owens. ‘I can’t even think about the trauma.’

Mr Trump also took a dig at protesters yesterday as he referred to a flying visit he made to Maine last Friday, showing large crowds wearing ‘Make America Great Again’ red baseball caps.

He observed that no riot police had been needed to control the crowds, tweeting that there were ‘no wacko anarchists’ among his supporters.

Last night, a spokesman for the Black Lives Matter protest group said: ‘This president has done nothing but pour fuel on the fire of racism. His words and actions make the protesters more determined.’
