Teenage growing pains with a Mike Leigh twist
The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird’s directorial debut focuses on another awkward teenager: introverted, long-haired loner Daniel, who was looking forward to spending the summer in Florida – until his dad let him down. Instead, Daniel is stuck with his dowdy mother
Sue, who can’t do right for doing wrong in his eyes. Based on Joff Winterhart’s graphic novel (adapted by Bird’s wife, Lisa Owens), this is a comingof-age tale inspired by US indie movies with a hint of Mike Leigh. Daniel is played by Earl Cave (son of rock star Nick, right, with the always excellent Tamsin Greig), while W1A’s Monica Dolan is inspired as his librarian mum Sue, who is about to prove she has hidden depths. Rob Brydon and Alice Lowe are among the supporting
cast. From Monday
