David Bowie Night

-

BBC2, from 9.15pm

How would the much-missed singersongwriter (right) have dealt with Covid-19 and the lockdown? It would probably have inspired a new album that made us all look at the crisis in a startlingly new way.

Unfortunately we'll never know at all, but he remains an important cultural figure, and director Francis Whately's enthralling documentary trilogy, which is getting a welcome reshowing this evening, helps to remind us why.

It begins with Finding Fame, which takes viewers back to the 1960s as young David Jones takes inspiration from such diverse sources as Anthony Newley and Buddhism to create his performance style, personal philosophy and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

Five Years (10.45pm) explores key moments in Bowie's career and The Last Five Years (12.15am) offers insights into his creative burst before his untimely death from cancer in 2016. ★★★★★
