Huey Morgan’s Latin Music Adventure
BBC4, 9.30pm His mischievous personality and Puerto Rican background make New Yorker
Huey Morgan – BBC 6 Music DJ and singer of the Fun Lovin' Criminals – a natural and inspiring presenter for this three-part tour of Latin America and its music.
In the opening episode of his exploration of what he describes as a mix of ‘African beats, European melody and indigenous culture', Morgan is in Brazil (right with performer Carlinhos Brown), where the samba drives the carnival and the bossa nova of The Girl From Ipanema has seduced the world.
But Morgan also delves down some less well-known musical pathways, including the revolutionary, psychedelia-inspired Tropicalia sound of the1960s, which led to the imprisonment of pioneer Gilberto Gil by the military regime. Morgan meets up with Gil to remind us of the power that music can have beyond pure pleasure.
