Keith Haring: Street Art Boy

-

BBC2, 9.15pm He might not be the most instantly recognisable name in the art world but Keith Haring’s star shone brightly for a brief period in which his incredible body of work inspired a whole generation of street artists.

A friend of both Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Haring was born in 1958 in Pennsylvania and died, aged only 31, from Aids-related complications. Openly gay and determined to raise awareness of HIV and its impact, he became an activist early on. After his diagnosis in 1988 he set up his own foundation to help spread the word.

Thirty years on from Haring’s passing, director Ben Anthony brings him out of the shadows and into the limelight once again by painting a portrait of a remarkable man. Friends and family discuss his life and work, linking it to politics and pop culture during the 1970s and 1980s.
