Emma Thompson (above) deservedly won an Oscar for her performance in Merchant Ivory’s adaptation of EM Forster’s novel about social barriers in turn-of-the-20th Century England. She plays a middle-class spinster whose friendship with the ailing matriarch of a wealthy family leads to tragedy and scandal for all involved.
