Best known for introducing a then 17-year-old Keira Knightley (below), Gurinder Chadha’s film tells the crowd-pleasing story of a young Asian girl who really can bend a football like you-know-who. An excellent Parminder Nagra also stars.

Has Jim Carrey ever made a better film? Discuss after enjoying his superb performance as a frustrated insurance salesman who discovers that his well-regimented and limited life is actually a giant reality TV show.

This gloriously over-the-top thriller still hits its big moments, with John Travolta playing the tough FBI agent who swaps faces with the criminal (Nicolas Cage) who killed his son.
STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Tuesday, E4, 9pm
In 2009, J. J. Abrams’ first Star Trek film was good, but this is even better, with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the rebooted Enterprise crew really hitting their stride. Benedict Cumberbatch is also great as a turncoat baddie.
BRIDGE OF SPIES Wednesday, More 4, 9pm
Tom Hanks plays the liberal American lawyer who reluctantly agrees to defend a friendless Russian spy (Mark Rylance). But when a US spy plane pilot is shot down over Russia, a perilous spy swap may need to be negotiated. Steven Spielberg directs.
SUFFRAGETTE Thursday, Film 4, 6.50pm
Carey Mulligan stars as Maud Watts, an East End laundry worker battling all the injustices faced by working women in 1912, and no vote. Look out for Meryl Streep as Emmeline Pankhurst and Natalie Press as poor Emily Wilding Davison.
ZODIAC Friday, BBC1, 10.45pm
Director David Fincher charts the hunt for a real-life serial killer responsible for murders in San Francisco in the late 1960s and early 1970s who taunted police and the media with cryptic messages. Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. head the cast.
