‘This utter failure is putting health at risk’

Brian Payne, a barrister based in Newcastle but who lives in Scotland, said: ‘If I come into contact with people who are infected and that can’t be traced and I go back to Scotland, I run a big risk of spreading it in Scotland – and of course the Scottish tracing app won’t pick that up.’

Both government­s say they are working on a solution but Labour South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth described the issue a ‘shambles’.

He said: ‘Five months ago, I raised my fears with the First Minister over having two separate apps north and south of the Border and Nicola Sturgeon gave me an assurance both systems would be compatible with each other.

‘I am furious this hasn’t happened and this utter failure is putting the health of my constituen­ts at risk.’

A Scottish Government spokesman said: ‘The UK Government are working on developing the technology for our respective apps to be compatible across the UK.’
