Spellbinding... Hagrid’s girl’s now a film star too!

- By Beverley Lyons

SHE’S definitely following in some rather large footsteps.

But the daughter of Scots actor Robbie Coltrane – most famous for Hagrid the giant in the Harry Potter films – has landed a breakout role in a major Hollywood movie.

Alice McMillan, 22, will join an A-list cast which includes Ryan Reynolds, Salma Hayek, Samuel L Jackson, Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas.

Brought up in Dunbartonshire, she is the daughter of sculptor Rhona Gemmell and Anthony McMillan – better known by his stage name, Robbie Coltrane. They split in 2003.

While her brother Spencer chose art school, Miss McMillan was inspired by her father’s success.

A former student of Glasgow’s Clyde College, also the training ground for actors Joe McFadden, Iain De Caestecker and Richard Rankin, she made her screen debut in Outlander in 2014, before a role in Dark Water, which was selected for the Palm Springs International ShortFest in 2016.

Signing with prestigious agency Hamilton Hoddell, which counts Robert Carlyle, Angelica Houston, Tilda Swinton and Rupert Grint among its talents, she has landed her first US blockbuster role in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.

The film is the action comedy sequel to The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which grossed more than £140 million. It began filming in March last year in London, Italy and Croatia, and is due for release in 2021.

Coltrane told Radio Times last month: ‘I’ve been trying to give her advice, like don’t take it personally if you don’t get the part. It’s not you, it’s just you’re not suitable for that part.’
