PICK OF THE DAY
Comedy Legends
Sky Arts, 9pm
The series returns with an opening episode focused on a unique figure who towers over every subsequent performer from the past century: Charlie Chaplin (right). Presenter and comedy veteran Barry Cryer extols the genius of the film star whose gifts transcended language and borders in the silent era, while a clutch of comedians also testify to their love of The Little Tramp, among them Tony Hawks, Steve Punt and Jo Caulfield.
As well as an exploration of his career, this is also the story of Chaplin's life, and his emergence from the unimaginable poverty of a Victorian childhood in London to cross the Atlantic and become the most famous person on the planet.
Clips from Modern Times and The Great Dictator will whet appetites for the complete films. A serviceable primer for Chaplin novices. ★★★★ ★
