All five living US presidents offered messages of condolence, while Pope Francis praised the Duke for his ‘distinguished record’ and the devotion he showed to his marriage and family.
Barack Obama said he and his wife Michelle were nervous about the ‘palaces and pomp’ of the Monarchy ahead of their visit but the Queen and Philip put them ‘at ease with their grace and generosity’.
Donald Trump, who met the Royal Family twice during his four years in office, said the Duke’s death was ‘an irreplaceable loss for Great Britain, and for all who hold dear our civilisation’.
King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain sent a telegram to ‘Dear Aunt Lilibet’ to mourn the passing of ‘Dear Uncle Philip’.
Spanish newspaper ABC carried a full-page picture of the Duke doffing a bowler hat during his retirement in 2017. In France, Le Parisien carried the headline ‘The Queen loses her Prince’, while Catalonia’s La Vanguardia honoured him with the words: ‘Goodbye to a century of British history.’
