Relatively few child stars go on to have major screen careers as an adult. Arguably the most famous exception to the rule is London-born Elizabeth Taylor, although her enduring fame is as much to do with her private life as her movies.

Here, key photos of Taylor, from her early stardom in National Velvet and Giant (right, on set with James Dean) to her years as an AIDS activist, illustrate her extraordinary life. And, of course, her headline-grabbing marriages to Richard Burton also feature.
