Leaders’ togetherness is a reason for optimism
THE coverage of the G7 meeting in Cornwall this week may have focused more on Boris and Carrie Johnson and Joe and Jill Biden hitting the beach in a spirit of bonhomie than the actual programme of events, but there is a serious side to this get-together.
After Donald Trump’s more isolationist ‘America First’ approach, this meeting – along with COP26 in Glasgow in November – is a real chance to re-establish global leadership.
The signs are good. Collective action on tech firms paying their taxes and a commitment to help vaccinate poorer countries heralds a new chapter of active collaboration between nations to improve all our lives.
If meaningful climate action can also be achieved, then there really is reason for optimism.
