You’d be forgiven for thinking twice before watching a drama about the pandemic: haven’t we all experienced quite enough of it first hand? Yet writer Dennis Kelly gives us an unmissable bittersweet comedy that stands up as engrossing entertainment as well as an accurate document of what life has been like in Britain during lockdown.
The setting is the home of an unnamed couple – a successful, self-made businessman (James McAvoy, right) and his charity-worker partner (Sharon Horgan) – and their ten-year-old son.
As we follow their lives from the arrival of Covid through the months of lockdown, we see their relationship tested to the limit by the inadequacies and demands of each other and also the stresses and strains of the pandemic. Kelly’s script leaps lightly between laughter and tragedy, and the two stars are at the top of their game. ★★★★★
