A Pandemic Poem: Where Did The World Go?
BBC2, 9pm
Simon Armitage (right) has proved himself to be a resounding success as Poet Laureate, with an accessible style and winning common touch that sets him apart from some of his predecessors.
He has now given himself the monumental challenge of addressing Britain’s experience of the pandemic in his latest poem, Where Did The World Go?, which provides the backbone of this unique film.
As well as Armitage declaiming his verses, accompanied by dancers, there is also the testimony of ordinary Britons, who talk about how they have often struggled to get through the past year.
There are some rather arch artistic moments that veer on the pretentious, but Armitage’s heartfelt sincerity ensures that his film is a valuable snapshot of our times. ★★★★★
