I take issue with Andrew Roberts’ opinion piece last week on appropriate remuneration for the position of Prime Minister.
It is vital to differentiate between the demands of public service and private enterprise.
The former is dictated by devotion to the cause of the common good, the latter to the pursuit of profit.
Today’s concentration upon monetary rewards reveals a society which knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing.
Let us acknowledge that every individual worker in whatever sector deserves sufficient rewards to live a decent life, but public service marches to the beat of a different drum from that of private enterprise.
