Record-breaker Louise is just CHAMPION!
GOLF: Scotland’s Louise Duncan secured a record-breaking 9&8 win over Johanna Lea Ludviksdottir to clinch the 118th Women’s Amateur Championship.
In a scheduled 36-hole final at Kilmarnock (Barassie), the home favourite managed to build up a significant lead to ensure proceedings were brought to an end eight holes early.
Victory for Duncan earns her entry to the AIG Women’s Open, US Women’s Open, The Evian Championship and Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship.
Iceland’s Ludviksdottir, who had beaten Shannon McWilliam — another Scot — to reach the final, had gone one up after the first hole before a bogey brought it back to all square.
It remained that way until the 11th hole when Duncan produced an eagle and by the midway point she had established a lead of five.
Another eagle, this one from the bunker, on the 19th extended the North Ayrshire resident’s advantage to put her within touching distance of the title and it was all but wrapped up when Ludviksdottir dropped another shot during her second attempt at the ninth to put her opponent nine up.
One more halved hole took place before the 118th edition of the tournament was concluded with Scotland having a champion for the first time in 24 years. PARA-CYCLING: British pair Sophie Unwin and Jenny Holl clinched gold in yesterday’s women’s tandem road race at the Para-cycling World Championships. The newlyformed duo outsprinted their rivals in Estoril, Portugal.
