McInnes in frame for Baggies job

- By Graeme Croser

DEREK McINNES has emerged as a leading contender for the vacant managerial position at West Bromwich Albion.

The Midlands club have been looking for a new boss since Sam Allardyce stepped down following the club’s relegation from the Premier League and have placed McInnes on their shortlist of candidates.

Chris Wilder was the initial favourite but fell out of the running as the club courted David Wagner, who has instead accepted an offer to manager Young Boys of Bern.

Former Aberdeen boss McInnes, who left Pittodrie in February, has strong ties to The Hawthorns, courtesy of a successful three-year playing spell there.

As captain he led the Baggies to Premier League promotion in 2002 and he remains popular with the club’s supporters.

Former Blackburn Rovers boss Michael Appleton is also under consideration for the job while Alex Neil has been linked with the post.
