Time for Kennedy to make a fresh start

-

JOHN KENNEDY is said to be swithering over his future at Celtic after being told he can stay on under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

It is hard to know whether that says more about Kennedy or the club itself.

As assistant to Neil Lennon, he played a pretty prominent role in an abomination of a campaign last season.

There should be an element of accepting responsibility for that in his eventual decision.

However, he also ought to ask himself what good it would do him to stay on.

What would it do for Kennedy’s reputation outside Parkhead with chief executives looking for ambitious, interesting prospects for their managerial positions?

He was clear last season when stating he believes he can be a manager. He insists he knows when the time will be right to take that challenge.

It is seven years since Kennedy joined the first-team coaching staff at Celtic. He turned down an opening at Hibs in November 2019.

He will be 38 soon and it seems evident that if he doesn’t make it clear he is ready to make the jump soon, that particular boat will sail off without him for good.

Just recently, Lennon expressed regret over the fact he didn’t take his own backroom staff in at Parkhead for his second spell in charge.

Kennedy hanging around interminably isn’t likely to do the new guy much good either.

That’s why everyone there, particularly him, would do well to seek a fresh start.
