Reclaiming Amy

-

BBC2, 9pm

Can it really be ten years since Amy Winehouse died so tragically aged only 27? Since then her huge talent as a singer and songwriter has at times been almost eclipsed by the events that led up to her death. Cruelly, her grief-stricken family has been the target of fans who know nothing of what went on in private but still, wrongly, blame them for her decline.

Now Amy’s parents and friends – many speaking for the first time – paint a true picture of the singer’s complex personality and her problems. The testimony of her mother Janis (right, with Amy and her father Mitch), battling multiple sclerosis and memory loss, is highly affecting.

Amy herself is preserved forever young in the footage, and there’s a chilling moment foretelling her self-destruction as, asked about her worst fear, she replies: ‘What am I scared of? Myself.’ ★★★★★
