Park by a wall ... so it’s harder to jack up your motor

-

PARK in a secure location – ideally in a well-lit area with CCTV cameras. Thieves prefer to target vehicles parked in a quiet, dark spot where they will not be seen. It is also wise to park close to a wall or fence as this makes it harder for thieves to get a trolley jack under your car.

MARK your catalytic converter with a ‘smart water’ pen, which can be purchased for around £18. This will make it possible to identify if stolen. An accompanying sticker in your car window may act as a deterrent.

A SAFETY lock, such as a £100 ‘catloc’, will make it harder to steal your converter. It does not guarantee security, but may put thieves off trying. You can also install a tilt alarm, which would alert you and ward off thieves if your car is raised.

ALSO, only use a Government-licensed end-of-life vehicles firm for car parts and scrapping vehicles. Ideally, buy a new replacement catalytic converter. Cash-in-hand dealerships are not licensed and encourage the black market in stolen parts. Also seek out a member of the Vehicle Recyclers’ Association.

REPORT any theft immediately to the police. If you spy criminals stealing, be wary of approaching them. However, if it is safe, try to take photos of them and their vehicle, making sure to get the number plate details. You should then report the crime to your insurance firm.
